Berlin Berlin (; German: [bɛʁˈliːn] ) is the capital and biggest city of Germany by the area and population. The city is one of the 16 states of Germany . It is contiguous with Potsdam, the funding of Brandenburg and surrounded by the state of Brandenburg.

Both cities are in the middle of their Berlin-Brandenburg capital region, which is, with an area of over 30,000 km ² and about six million inhabitants, Germany 's third-largest metropolitan region following the Rhine-Main and Rhine-Ruhr areas.
