Adelaide Adelaide (AD-ə-layd) is the capital city of the state of South Australia, and the fifth-most populous city of Australia. The demonym Adelaidean is employed to denote the city and Adelaide's inhabitants. Adelaide is situated on the Adelaide Plains north of the Fleurieu Peninsula in the west and the Mount Lofty Ranges.

The city was founded as the projected capital for the sole British province in Australia in 1836.

Colonel William Light, among Adelaide's founding fathers, built the city centre and picked its location near the River Torrens, in the area originally occupied by the Kaurna people and called Tarndanyangga ("area of the red kangaroo"). Light's design, now recorded as a national tradition, set out the city centre in a grid layout, interspaced by public squares and broad boulevards, and entirely surrounded by parklands.

Colonial Adelaide was shaped by the diversity and prosperity of its settlers to Australian cities' history. Until the postwar era, it had been the third-largest city of Australia . As the authorities and commercial centre of South Australia , Adelaide is the website of many financial and governmental institutions. Most of these are concentrated in the city centre along the boulevards of North Terrace and King William Street.
