Brief information about the Olonkinbyen

Olonkinbyen (literally The Olonkin Town) is one of the two settlements on the Norwegian island of Jan Mayen (the other being Puppebu). It was named after the explorer Gennady Olonkin.The just inhabitants on the island would be the 18 employees working for the Norwegian Armed Forces as well as the Norwegian Meteorological Institute.

Olonkinbyen houses the staff that run the meteorological observation station station, Jan Mayensfield air-conditioning and other infrastructure. The monitoring service team are liable for synoptic weather observations and the radiosonde releases.

This meteorological station's crew is engaged for six months at a time. Aircraft delivers supplies eight times. Heavy products and fuel are carried by boat during the summer. The settlement generates its own energy via three generators.
