It was the birthplace of William R. Tolbert, Jr., the 20th president of Liberia. Tolbert had planned to make Bensonville the country capital town before he was killed in a coup in 1980. Before the Liberian Civil War, the industrial task of Bensonville included producing sawn timber, milled rice, soap, paints, plastics, furniture and fittings, cement cubes, oils fish, and confections.
