Massawa Massawa (muh-SAH-wuh;-RRB-, or Mitsiwa, is a port Town in the Semienawi Keyih Bahri Region of Eritrea, Situated on the Red Sea in the northern end of the Gulf of Zula Together with the Dahlak Archipelago. As a historical and important interface for many centuries, a succession of polities, including Abyssinia, the Aksumite Empire and the Ottoman Empire ruled it.
Massawa was the funding of the Italian Colony of Eritrea until it had been moved in 1897 to Asmara. Massawa is one of the hottest places in the world, with an yearly mean average temperature of 30 °C/86 °F.
