Its inhabitants in 2010 has been 16,451. Belmopan is the settlement in Belize, supporting Belize City and San Ignacio although it's the smallest capital city in the Americas by population. Belmopan is one of the newest federal capital cities.

Belmopan was one of two settlements in Belize to hold town status, along with Belize City. Belmopan is located in Cayo District at an altitude of 76 metres (249 ft ) above sea level. Belmopan was built just to the east of the Belize River, 80 km (50 mi) inland in the former capital, the port of Belize City, after that town 's near destruction by Hurricane Hattie in 1961.

The government was moved to Belmopan. Its National Assembly Building is designed to resemble a warrior temple.
