Brief information about the Belize City
Belize City Belize City is the biggest city in Belize and was formerly the capital of the former British Honduras. It is at the mouth of the Haulover Creek, which is a tributary of the Belize River.
The Belize River empties into the Caribbean Sea five miles from Belize City on the Philip Goldson Highway on the coast of the Caribbean. The town is the country port and its own industrial and financial hub. Local citizens drop anchor outside the port and tender cruise ships.
When Hurricane Hattie swept ashore on October 31, the town was almost entirely destroyed in 1961. It was the capital of British Honduras (since Belize was then named) until the government had been transferred to the new capital of Belmopan in 1970.
